AYUTTHAYA - A fire caused an estimated 10 million baht damage at a temple in Nakhon Luang district before dawn on Friday. No one was hurt.

Seven firetrucks sent to the scene took about an hour to control the fire at Wat Roi Rai in tambon Tha Chang.

The blaze began about 5am in a new two-storey building made from golden teak, comprising four living quarters and a prayer hall.

Local residents rushed to help monks remove valuables from other living quarters nearby.

The four living quarters and the prayer hall were gutted by the flames. The building was still under construction and not in use yet.

Temple monk Phra Somchai said nobody was in the building at the time. The blaze started in a closed room at the front of the building. He thought the cause was an electrical short circuit.
