Fire destroys Ararat West Primary school classrooms

The fire destroyed four classrooms at the school.

A fire has destroyed four classrooms of a school in western Victoria.

Fire crews were called in from surrounding districts to battle the blaze at the Ararat West Primary School about 1:30am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The CFA's Bernie Fradd said four classrooms at the "fairly old" school had been destroyed.

"Ararat being a pretty stable community, a lot of people have got ties to the school," he said.

"There were some recent refurbishments done so it's a real shame for that school community and the town of Ararat."

Despite the damage, the rest of the school was saved and Mr Fradd said the school should be able to reopen on Monday.

"The area will have to be cordoned off obviously with some safety barriers, but the rest of the school has been untouched," he said.
