Fire declared 'major incident' due to chemical hazard and exploding gas cylinders

A serious fire has broken out at a farm and has been declared a 'major incident' with smoke being seen for miles around.

Police have closed surrounding roads near the scene in Rame Head, Cornwall, with multiple fire crews seen heading to the blaze.

Pictures, taken from the edge of Whitsand Bay Golf Course, show smoke from the fire billowing from the Peninsula, Plymouth Live reports.

A local resident, who took these pictures, said: "Two fire engines and a water carrier have been by my house so far."

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "The barn measures 40 metres by 30 metres and is well alight, including a quantity of fuel and gas cylinders, some of which have exploded.

"There are no casualties and firefighters are working hard to prevent the fire spreading to nearby fertiliser.

"Roads in the area are closed to allow the emergency services to carry out their work safely."

Live traffic and travel site Inrix reports: "Roads blocked due to serious fire in Rame . Following a fire at a farm, roads in the area have been blocked off by police.

"This is due to chemicals also present near the fire that are a hazard."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were alerted to a large barn fire at a farm near Rame, Torpoint, at around 2.10pm this afternoon.

"Police are assisting the fire authority with the closure of surrounding roads due to the presence of hazardous material at the site and its risk of combustion.

"No injuries have been reported.

"A cordon of approximately one kilometre is in place which has required the evacuation of a small number of properties.

"It is currently not known how the fire started.

"Incident ongoing."
