A fire has severely damaged a Buddhist temple in southeastern Melbourne.

About 80 firefighters battled the blaze at the Bright Moon Buddhist Temple in Springvale South on Sunday evening.

"Crews were called to the place of worship in Springvale Road about 8pm and arrived to find a large multi-storey building ablaze," Fire Rescue Victoria said.

Emergency authorities advised residents in the surrounding area to remain indoors, close doors and windows and turn off heating and cooling systems.

Fire crews said the blaze was under control at 10.35pm.
