Fire crews work through the night to tackle huge fire at Langar

Fire crews tackling a large fire in Langar have now been at the scene of the blaze for more than 12 hours.

On Thursday evening, May 21, crews confirmed that smoke billowing over the Nottinghamshire village contains a number of "different chemicals".

Firefighters from three fire services were called to the Langar Airfield industrial estate, behind The Unicorn's Head off Main Street in the village.

The last update said fifteen crews from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire were in at the scene after first receiving the call at around 2.43pm.

A spokesman has this morning (Friday, May 22) confirmed that crews are still at the scene and are in the process of swapping over shifts.

More updates are expected on the situation.

Currently, it is not known how the fire started, however Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that there are a number of chemicals in the smoke that cannot be identified.

A source in Langar has told Nottinghamshire Live the police are warning residents via a megaphone that there may be asbestos in the smoke, however this has not yet been confirmed by the force.

Residents in the area have been warned to keep windows and doors shut.

A spokesperson for  Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service  said yesterday: "Crews from three different Fire Service's are still working extremely hard to extinguish the fire.

"Smoke from fires contain lots of different chemicals that can't be immediately identified - please continue to keep your doors and windows closed as a precaution."

The spokesperson added: "There are currently 15 appliances, with one high volume pump, three water carriers, one command unit and approximately 90 firefighters from three different services.

"Crews will now start to be rotated with night shift staff and are working tirelessly to control the fire."
