Fire crews tackle tyre blaze at Newburn 'former power station'

Residents are being advised to keep their windows and doors shut due to an ongoing fire in the Newburn area of Newcastle.

Just before 3pm, fire crews responded to reports of a fire on Newburn Bridge Road. The source of the fire is believed to be tyres and other combustibles that are reportedly alight. This is reportedly at the former Stella North coal-fired power station.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene from Byker, Newcastle Central and Swalwell Community Fire Stations. The fire service is advising Newburn residents nearby to keep all windows and doors shut while crews tackle the blaze.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that our Fire Control team received a call at 2.50pm this afternoon with reports of a fire on Newburn Bridge Road in Newburn.

“Three appliances were deployed to the scene from Byker, Newcastle Central and Swalwell Community Fire Stations.

“The source of the fire is believed to be tyres and other combustibles that are reportedly alight - with that in mind we would advise residents nearby to keep all windows and doors shut while our crews tackle the blaze.

“The incident is ongoing.”
