Fire crews tackle bonfire that engulfed 200 metres squared of land

Firefighters from across north Bristol tackled a blaze when a bonfire got out of control and spread across a large area.

Three crews from Avonmouth, Patchway and Thornbury rushed to the blaze at Northwick Road in the village of Pilning, near Avonmouth, on Friday.

They found a man’s bonfire had spread to nearby piles of pallets and a wood storage area.

In total, an area of around 200 metres-squared was engulfed in flames, with the smoke rising to be seen all over that part of north west Bristol and the Severn Bridges.

Three firefighters wore breathing apparatus to take on the fire, using two high-pressure hose reels and two jets to put it out.

Other crews moved 11 cylinders away from the heat of the blaze and the landowner assisted damping down the area that was burned.

Investigations concluded that the fire spread out of control accidentally.
