Fire crews tackle blaze at disused hotel in Ayr

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a vacant hotel on Miller Road, Ayr.

The former Elms Court is the second disused hotel in the area to be gutted by flames in the last month.

Scottish Fire and Rescue crews were called to the scene just after 3.30am.

An eyewitness said: “We woke up shortly after 4am this morning to the smell of smoke.

“We saw a fire engine on Dalblair Road pumping water through to a fire on Miller Road.

“And on a closer look, we noticed it was Elms Court- another of the town’s hotels which holds lots of memories for many.

“It’s so sad to see.

“And to think this happened just after the Belleisle fire.”

No one was injured as a result of the fire.

The road was closed in both directions to allow fire crews to deal with the inferno.

A fire service spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 3.32am on Monday, July 1 to reports of a fire within a vacant building on Miller Road, Ayr.

“Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances to the scene and firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

“There are no reported casualties.

“We expect a presence to be maintained throughout the morning.”

Crews remain on the scene this morning.
