A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 11.45pm on Monday, August 26 to reports of a fire.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances to attend the scene.

"They found that there was smoke coming from a sub-floor ventilator and an onsite engineer was called.

"There were no injuries and fire crews have left the scene."

A spokesman for the hotel said: "At approximately midnight last night an air conditioning unit developed a small fault.

"The hotel evacuated the premises which is standard procedure in events like this.

"The cause, we believe, was gas coming from the air conditioning unit which is similar to smoke being admitted.

"There was no fire and the guests were out of the hotel for one hour 45 minutes. Our guests have been completely understanding."
