Fire crews rush to M5 crash in heavy rain

All three emergency services rushed to a crash in torrential rain this morning (June 27) which stopped traffic on the M5 near Bristol.

The stormy conditions were thought to have been partially to blame for the crash, which saw fire crews, ambulances and police attend on the northbound side of the M5 between junction 20 at Clevedon and junction 19 at Portishead in North Somerset - just half a mile before the turn off for Portishead and the Gordano Services.

The crash happened at around 9.30am, and closed Lane One of the M5 for around half an hour while emergency services dealt with the aftermath.

It is thought no one was seriously injured in the crash, as a full collision investigation was not deemed necessary.

Two fire crews from Clevedon and another from Weston-super-Mare were in attendance, along with South West Ambulance Service, the police and Highways England to clear the debris and crashed vehicles, and reopen the road.

A spokesperson for Clevedon fire station said the collision happened 'during heavy rain'.

"Crews made the vehicles safe and cleared the road of debris, before leaving it in the hands of the police and Highways Engaland," he said.
