Eight firefighting crews have rushed to the scene of an apartment fire on Watkins Street at Merewether on Friday.

A spokesperson for NSW Fire and Rescue said the service received several Triple-0 calls with reports black smoke was pouring from a three-storey apartment building around 12.10pm.

Crews arrived on the scene a short time later to find all occupants of the building had evacuated, and the western apartment well-alight.

Firefighters worked for around an hour to bring the blaze under control and remained on the scene around 1.30pm cleaning up, the spokesperson said.

No one was injured as a result of the fire and the building was empty when fire crews arrived.
