Fire crews remain at scene of huge fire which lit up sky over Bootle

This was the scene through the night after a huge bonfire stacked high with furniture and rubbish was set alight, with flames and smoke seen for miles around.

Two crews remained at the Norfolk Close site in Bootle this morning, damping down the bonfire which threatened to spiral out of control on Tuesday evening.

Residents on Brookhill Road, near Hawthorne Road, had expressed concern about the mounting unlit bonfire earlier in the week.

The fire was set alight on land opposite Norfolk Close and crews used compressed air foam to tackle the flames.

People living around the Hawthorne Road area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed to guard against the billowing smoke.

And those with medical conditions were told to keep their medications close by and urged to call NHS 111 if they became ill.

This morning, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said they remained at the scene to cool the embers of the bonfire.

A spokeswoman said: "We would urge people not to have bonfires on open land."

Staff from Sefton Council are also in attendance and using a JCB to spread out the material and allow firefighters using handheld branches to ensure it is fully extinguished.

Police cordons are in place on Brook Hill Road.

Police and the fire service had previously issued a statement about the dangers of bonfires at this time of year and urged everyone to stay safe.
