Fire crews race to Walkerburn in the Borders to tackle major blaze at chemical plant

Firefighters are currently tackling a blaze at a chemical plant in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services rushed to Rathburn Chemicals at an industrial unit in Walkerburn at around 6.45am after reports of a loud bang being heard.

Two people were injured in the fire involving potentially hazardous materials.

The A72 is currently closed whilst specialist officers deal with the blaze.

Walkerburn Primary School has also been forced to close and bus services are distrupted.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 6.44am on Friday, January 10 to reports of a fire within an industrial unit in Walkerburn, Scottish Borders.

"Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and two specialist resources due to potentially hazardous materials, and firefighters are working to extinguish the flames.

"Two casualties have been treated at the scene, and crews remain in attendance."
