A silver Volkwswagen which was on the hard shoulder had caught fire they said and was "well alight" when crews arrived.

Thankfully all occupants were out of the car and no was injured.

However, firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the flames.

They were on the scene for around an hour a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said.

Two lanes were closed with Highways England traffic officers on the scene to help divert traffic around it.

However there were reports of delays as a result.
