Fire crews race to Scots street after hearse bursts into flames in horror blaze

Fire crews raced to a street in North Ayrshire after a hearse burst into flames this afternoon.

Emergency services scrambled to Glencairn Street in Stevenston after a report of the vehicle, which is used for taking coffins to a funeral, on fire.

The road was closed near the JET petrol station while the fire brigade tackled the flames at around 4pm.

It's not yet clear if there was a coffin inside the hearse at the time of the blaze.

It's not believed anyone was injured as a result of the fire and the road has now reopened.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson told the Record: "We attended at Glencairn Street in Stevenston after reports of a hearse on fire.

"We got a report at 3.51pm.

"We sent an appliance and it's all been dealt with."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 4.20pm however, fire is the lead agency and officers are assisting with traffic management."
