Two people rushed to hospital after fire at Edinburgh flat left street cordoned off

Two people have been rushed to hospital after a fire at a property in an Edinburgh street last night near the city centre.

Emergency services blocked off the road on Bernard Terrace in Newington at around 8.30pm after reports of the blaze, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) still there more than two hours later.

Cordoning off the road, images taken from the scene show four fire engines and two ambulances outside the block of flats, as well as multiple hose pipes in use, reports Edinburgh Live.

Five ambulance crews including a Special Operations Teams (SORT) attended the incident. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed they had been alerted to the blaze in a second floor flat, with the fire now under control. The exact cause of the fire in unknown at this time.

An SFRS spokeswoman said they were alerted to the fire around 8.30pm, and their last appliance left the scene around 10.40pm.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman added: "We were made aware of a fire at a property on Bernard Terrace in Edinburgh shortly after 8.35pm on Monday, September 19.

“One man has been taken to hospital for treatment to injuries sustained during the incident. Enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing and at an early stage.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call from Scottish fire and Rescue at 8.31pm last night to attend an incident on Bernard Terrace, Newington. We dispatched five crews, including the SORT team, and two patients were transported to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.”
