Fire crews praised for Blairgowrie blaze response

Emergency service personnel have been praised for their efforts following an early morning blaze in Blairgowrie.

Fire crews rushed to Blackthorn Place at 4.30am on Thursday last week. A cabin went up in flames before the fire then spread to a block of four homes.

The street was cordoned off while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service tackled the fire and an explosion.

Residents were evacuated and Blairgowrie Recreation Centre was used to provide temporary accommodation.

There were no reports of any injuries as a result of the drama.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “The fire started in a steel cabin and then spread through the roof of the first property.

“Two out of the four homes in the block were affected.

“The gas and electricity was isolated for safety purposes.”

Blairgowrie and Glens Conservative councillor Bob Brawn is vice-convener of Perth and Kinross Council’s housing and communities committee.

He said: “The fire and explosion would have been a shocking experience for all residents.

“While an investigation will look into the causes, the most important thing is that no-one was injured and no occupied property was effected.

“My thanks go to the emergency services, whose intervention brought the situation under control, and to council officers from the housing department for their work in meeting residents to reassure them and to see if any help was required.”

SNP local ward councillor Tom McEwan said: “I was devastated to learn of the fire and explosion at Blackthorn Place.

“It is good to hear residents affected were promptly evacuated and emergency accommodation was provided at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre.

“The council’s housing team attended to the residents in a very professional manner and went door-to-door to ensure residents felt safe and that any they had were addressed.

“I would like to thank the emergency services for their great work, and Stewart Milne and the council’s housing team for the support they provided.”
