Fire crews issue update after blaze ripped through Ayrshire chip shop

The cause of a blaze that ripped through a chip shop last night is still being probed by officials.

Emergency services raced to Prestwick Main Street just after 8.30pm as smoke was seen pouring from The Chippy.

Around four fire appliances descended on the Ayrshire town's busiest street along with police and ambulance crews.

A Facebook post from the chip shop said the takeaway had suffered an "electrical fire".

But the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said today that the cause of the blaze had not been determined at this stage.

Ten minutes after arriving at the scene last night, firefighters could be seen at the door of the chip shop aiming a hose upwards trying to get the blaze under control.

And a few moments later another firefighter could be seen removing parts of the sign from the front of the shop.

This morning Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said there was “no mention of casualties”, while also saying it was “unknown if incident was accidental”.

Fire crews are no longer at the scene today.

A Police Scotland spokesman added: “We were made aware by the fire service around 8.30pm on Friday, July 9 and officers assisted with traffic management at the scene.”
