Fire crews give emergency CPR to elderly man after his heart stops on Shields Road

Firefighters who rushed to the aid of a man who collapsed on Shields Road have been praised for possibly saving a life.

When an elderly man fell outside the Byker post office , he was fortunate that he was spotted by passing fire crews.

Two Byker Blue Watch crews were returning from Sandyford when they saw the man take unwell.

The crew, led by Watch Manager Scott Clements, began to administer first aid, but discovered the man had no vital signs. They immediately began CPR, and were successful in shocking his heart back into rhythm at the second attempt.

They continued to administer first aid and provide oxygen until the arrival of the specialist cardio team from North East Ambulance Service.

Other members of the crew placed salvage sheets around the casualty to provide screening from the general public. They were helped by an off duty nurse and a passer-by who also held the salvage sheet in place.

Paramedics arrived and, once the man was stabilised, he was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We understand that the man is recovering well in hospital and we wish him a successful recuperation.

"It's very likely that our crews saved this man's life. They deserve our grateful thanks.

"Saving and protecting lives is at the heart of our work.

"It's not just fires, road traffic accidents or water rescues - we are there when you need us, even when we're not expected."
