Fire crews called to tackle large blaze at Salford waste transfer station

Firefighters are currently tackling a large fire at a waste transfer station in Irlam.

Crews were called to a fire at a commercial premises on Gilchrist Road at 1pm today on Friday (May 7).

The blaze involves a large quantity of waste.

Three fire engines from Stretford, Eccles and Irlam stations are currently at the scene.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 1pm on Friday, 7th May, firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a commercial premises on Gilchrist Road, in Irlam.

“Three fire engines from Stretford, Eccles and Irlam fire stations quickly attended the scene. The fire involves a large quantity of waste inside a waste transfer station.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are tackling the fire using two hose reels and one jet. Fire crews remain at the scene at this time.”

The fire is causing smoke in the area.

Residents and businesses are advised to keep their windows and doors shut.
