Fire crews called to snooker club blaze after youths seen 'pouring petrol on roof'

Firefighters were called to tackle a blaze at a snooker club in Whitefield last night.

The fire happened at the Savanna Pool and Snooker in Albert Close just before 8pm on Tuesday (December 9).

Fire crews say youths were seen scaling the premises before pouring 'petrol' over the roof and setting it on fire. They then fled the scene.

The blaze damaged one corner of the roof but did not spread to the inside of the building.

A spokesman for Whitefield Fire Station told the Manchester Evening News : “It was attempted arson on the roof of the snooker club.

“It’s all on CCTV and is being investigated by police.

“What looks like three youths climbed onto the roof.

“They then poured petrol onto the roof and absconded. The roof was on fire in the corner and we quickly managed to put it out.”

In a statement, the club said: “We would like to thank everyone for all your messages of support, we confirm that earlier this evening the fire brigade attended the club and extinguished a small fire on the club roof, which has resulted in minor damage to a few slates.

“The club is absolutely fine and we are eagerly awaiting the reopening of the club.

“We would like to thank Whitefield Fire Station and Bury Police for their prompt attendance.”
