Fire crews called to rescue horse stuck leaping over gate

Rescue crews renamed a horse ‘Red Rum’ after it became trapped while trying to jump a gate.

Fire crews from Bedminster and Portishead were called just after 9.30am on Saturday (April 17) to Clapton-in-Gordano to reports of a 12-year-old horse stuck with its legs over a gate.

It is not known exactly how the horse got into the position - with its front and back legs either side of the gate - but it is likely it did so after trying to jump over the gate

The vet was called while fire crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the horse.

Bedminster Fire Station tweeted about the unusual rescue.

The horse was freed by firefighters (Avon Fire and Rescue Service)

In the tweet it said: “When 12 years old Bram believe it is #RedRum...

"Luckily we and @AFRSPortishead saved the day. #notjustfires #animalrescue.”

Red Rum was a champion Thoroughbred steeplechaser.

He achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977, and also came second in the two intervening years, 1975 and 1976.
