Fire crews race to 'burnt out' car in Edinburgh amid hundreds of calls on Bonfire Night

Fire crews across Scotland were called out to more than 350 blazes last night, on one of their busiest nights of the year.

While the public may look forward to the fireworks, Bonfire Night signals carnage for emergency personnel, who must deal with disorder and fire-starting.

Measures introduced in 2018 were rolled out again this year, including several dispersal zones which were set up across Edinburgh to prevent Bonfire Night violence.

Initial figures indicate that Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews responded to around 359 bonfires across the country between 3.30pm-11.30pm last night (November 5).

One of these incident included a "burnt out" car in Edinburgh's Pilton area, near Ferry Road.

Fire crews rushed to the scene on Ferry Road Avenue shortly before 10pm last night (6 November) amid reports of vehicle on fire.

Local Facebook group, TRIM and Friends of West Pilton, wrote: "Ongoing police incident to the rear of West Pilton Avenue flats.

"Police attending to a smashed up, burnt out white car."

One fire appliance was used to extinguish the blaze and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe. No one was inured as a result of the incident.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson: "A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 9.56pm on Tuesday, November 5 to reports of a car on fire in Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance to the city’s Ferry Road Avenue, where firefighters extinguished a fire which had taken hold of a vehicle."
