Fire crews were called to meet an Air Transat plane as it landed at Glasgow Airport this afternoon.

The flight had taken off for Toronto in Canada at 12.39, but was back on the tarmac at 12.55pm after having to make a U-turn.

Photos taken and shared on social media by Barry Robertson shows the fire engines in close proximity to the plane as it approaches the terminal.

A Glasgow Airport spokesperson told Glasgow Live: "I can confirm that the 12.45 AT to Toronto took off and then returned to airport with 246 people on board.

"The aircraft landed safely and without incident. It was met by our emergency services as per standard procedure."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called by the airport this afternoon.

A spokesperson said: "We did make an attendance at the airport, at the request, but we were stood down from it."

Air Transat advised: "Our flight from Glasgow to Toronto had a minor technical issue shortly after take-off today, and, returned to Glasgow Airport as a precaution.

"The aircraft landed normally and at no time was passenger safety compromised.

"The cause of the technical issue is now under investigation."
