Fire crews battle waste site fire for hours as blaze rages on

Fire crews remain at a recycling site after more than eight hours tackling a blaze that sent plumes of smoke billowing above north Liverpool.

Firefighters were called to Gaskells in Kirkdale at 5.21am after flames took hold of a "large quantity" of waste inside a building.

The incident has prompted safety warnings for people who live nearby, with advice including to keep doors and windows closed.

Crews were at the scene, close to Kirkdale Fire Station, within five minutes of being alerted on Sunday morning.

Describing the blaze as "significant", Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said initial efforts included splitting the fire into three sections.

A spokesperson said: "On arrival crews found a large quantity of waste material on fire inside a structure approximately 50m x 20m.

"Residents and businesses nearby should keep windows and doors closed. Anyone with existing medical conditions should keep medicines nearby and should call NHS 111 if ill effects occur."

Water was drawn from the nearby Leeds Liverpool Canal as part of efforts to extinguish the flames.

Gaskells confirmed the Foster Street fire was at its site on social media this morning, adding that no-one had been injured in the incident.

The company said: "We can confirm a fire at our plant in Liverpool this morning.

"Glad to confirm all our staff are safe and Merseyside Fire crews are in attendance."

By 2pm efforts were ongoing at the site, with firefighters using an aerial platform to reach some sections of the fire.
