Fire chief issues plea for people to be 'responsible' during lockdown after another blaze on Saddleworth Moor

A fire chief has issued a plea for people to be 'responsible' during lockdown after a blaze broke out on Saddleworth Moor.

Four fire engines and two wildfire units were scrambled to the scene after the fire broke out at 4.40pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire crews remained at the scene tackling the blaze for two and a half hours, a Manchester Fire service spokesman said.

Dave Swallow, station manager at Stalybridge and Mossley, said the fire meant crews were unable to attend 'life threatening incidents' elsewhere.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "Another nice day and another wildfire.

"This time in Saddleworth. Manchester Fire have four fire engines, two wildfire units plus other appliances.

"All of which cannot respond to life threatening incidents whilst dealing with this.

"Please enjoy your one hour of exercise responsibly."

He also posted pictures of the fire, showing smoke billowing from the scorched moorland.

On Thursday (April 2), the Manchester Evening News reported that the number of 'nuisance fires' had more than doubled in the first week of the coronavirus lockdown.
