Fire breaks out under scaffolding in Manchester city centre

A fire broke out under some scaffolding in Manchester city centre last night.

The blaze broke out on Back Piccadilly at around 8pm. Crews found a barrier alight underneath some scaffolding, a spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

One fire engine was sent to the scene. Crews were there for around 20 minutes.

Pictures taken last night showed firefighters at the scene as the flames broke out under the scaffolding. A spokesperson for GMFRS said: "At approximately 8pm on Sunday, 20 March, firefighters were called to reports of a fire on Back Piccadilly, in Manchester.

"One fire engine from Manchester Central quickly attended the scene. The fire involved a barrier which was alight underneath some scaffolding.

"Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for approximately 20 minutes."
