A luxury cruise ship, the Asuka II, caught fire on Tuesday while anchored at Yokohama Port's Osanbashi pier in Naka Ward, Yokohama.
At about 1:25 p.m., an emergency call was made to report a fire on the cruise ship, which is 241 meters in length.
Smoke was seen rising from the uppermost deck, and the Yokohama City Fire Bureau extinguished the fire about three hours.
There was no immediate information on any injuries.
Asuka II is one of the largest luxury passenger ships in Japan. It has nine decks with 436 rooms and a capacity of 872 passengers. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the ship has suspended its operations since March.
According to the Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal office, the ship has been anchored at Osanbashi since spring for refurbishment of its interior and balconies.
"Smoke rose from the center of the roof of the ship, and fire engines and other vehicles gathered on the quay," an official who witnessed the fire said.
