Fire breaks out at Winter Hill overnight

A fire has broken out overnight at Winter Hill in Bolton.

Pictures taken from a drone this morning show a large area of moorland has turned to scorched earth following the blaze.

Crews from six fire engines were called to the scene, near the Winter Hill transmitting station, at around 3am.

The firefighters were from Chorley and Rawtenstall, alongside a crew from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

At its height, one hectare of grass was on fire.

Firefighters tackled the blaze with beaters and two blowers.

The air support unit was called to the scene to assist with tactical support, according to a post on the Lancashire Fire Service website.

By 8am, firefighters remained at the scene extinguishing hot-spot pockets of fire.

They continued to dampen down hot spot areas at 9.30am.
