Fire breaks out at Edinburgh flats as man rushed to hospital amid evacuation

A man has been taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a block on Edinburgh flats.

The building on Broughton Street was evacuated around 5.20am this morning.

One man was rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

The road has been closed in both directions since 6am this morning and the public are being told by police to avoid the area.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious.

Edinburgh Police tweeted: “Due to an ongoing police incident Broughton Street, Edinburgh is closed in both directions.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 5.23am on Sunday, 5 December, officers were called to attend Broughton Street, Edinburgh to assist emergency colleagues after a fire broke out within a block of flats.

"The building was evacuated and one man was taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

"The road remains closed at this time."
