Fire crew rushes to A&E department as 'ambulances sent away from hospital'

Ambulances are being sent away from a hospital after a smoke was detected in its A&E department.

Crews were called at 8.28am to the accident and emergency department at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Ambulances to the hospital are all being diverted elsewhere during the emergency, Leicestershire Live reported.

A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We've been called to the infirmary after smoke was seen coming from one of the rooms of the A&E, which we are investigating with the LRI team."

They later told The Mirror: "Medics were investigating a smell of burning.

"It turned out to be a blown fuse in the distribution board in the pathology lab."

Fire crews were still at the hospital as of 9.45am, but they were due to stand down as the issue was dealt with in house.

A spokesperson for Leicester’s Hospitals said: “Following the discovery of smoke this morning just before 8.30am, we temporarily and safely evacuated an area of our emergency department.

“No patients or staff were harmed and the area reopened around an hour later. We’d like to thank colleagues at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue for their quick response.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this incident may have caused.”
