Fire at Swansea city centre jewellers sees smoke 'fill the sky'

A jewellers in Swansea city centre was the scene of a fire in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at Crouch in Oxford Street, at around 3am today.

The cause of the fire is so far unknown and is being investigated.

Eyewitness Keiran Ivett, 30, from Swansea was walking home from the city centre when he saw Oxford Street “lit up with fire engines”.

He said: “There were two or three of them (fire engines) and police cars blocking off the street. We could hear the alarm in the shop they were trying to break into but couldn’t see any smoke or fire so it seemed odd to have such a big response team come out.

“After a minute or two they finally broke the locks on the shutter and as it came up so did all the smoke and it started to fill the sky as they continued to try and force their way in.”

The moment explosions were heard from a car fire in a Swansea street:

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “On Monday, 16/03/2020 at 3:01am, crews from Swansea Central and Swansea West attended a fire at a commercial property in Oxford Street, Swansea city centre.

“The fire was located on the ground floor of the property and was extinguished using four breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one jet. Hydraulic spreaders were also used by the Fire Service.

“Firefighters isolated the electric supply and ventilated the first floor of the property using a positive pressure ventilation fan.

“The Fire Service left the incident at 4:36am.”

South Wales Police also attended and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crouch has been approached for comment.
