Fire at homeless shelter in Bristol - police are investigating

Police are investigating a fire which broke out at a homeless shelter in Bristol.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service was called to the shelter in Jamaica Street at around 5.30am this morning (July 26).

The fire started in a bedroom on the second floor of the Kingsdown hostel and caused the entire building to be evacuated, but its cause is unclear with enquiries ongoing.

No injuries were sustained but the room in which the blaze took hold is said to be "inhabitable".

"We were called to reports of a fire at 5.26am this morning," said Nick Ludwig, of Avon Fire & Rescue Service.

"Two crews from Temple Fire Station and one from Southmead attended, as well as an aerial appliance.

"The fire was on the second floor of the building, which crews extinguished using a hose and four breathing apparatus.

"Crews remained at the scene for an hour and twenty minutes to make sure the fire was fully extinguished and to liaise with residents.

"The police investigation is still ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

"We can confirm there were no injuries, but the bedsit in which the fire started is inhabitable."

Mr Ludwig praised the actions of the accommodation manager, who shut the door to room where the fire was - once the person inside it had left - to prevent the flames from spreading throughout the building.

Avon and Somerset Police said enquiries into "suspected criminal damage" are ongoing.

A spokesperson said: "We have this morning received a report from the fire service about suspected criminal damage at an address in Jamaica Street at about 5.30am. Enquiries are ongoing."

The Jamaica Street hostel, not to be confused with the Compass Centre run by St Mungo’s, is a supported housing centre for people who have experienced homelessness, addiction or mental health issues.

The emergency accommodation is listed as high-level support, with staff on site around the clock and a support coordinator to work with tenants.
