Fire at primary school causes major damage

Part of a large Welsh primary school will be closed on Monday after a fire broke out in a section of the building.

Firefighters were called to Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili shortly after 9am on Saturday morning. Five crews were in attendance and remained on scene for more than two hours, tackling a blaze that started in the school’s Meithrin area and spread to the roof of the building.

Pictures from the scene show extensive damage to a part of the school - which has more than 400 pupils in total. You can get the latest WalesOnline newsletters e-mailed to you directly for free by signing up here.

Nobody was injured in the blaze and the majority of the school will be open as normal on Monday. However, there will be no classes for the nursery pupils as a result. The school’s head teacher Lynn Griffiths said: “School site has now been made safe. It is our intention currently to open the school to pupils from Reception to Year 6 on Monday. No school for nursery pupils on Monday. Nursery pupils to access and leave site via main school entrance. No entry to the site from Wooden Class around Reception Yard.”

The school confirmed that nobody was injured as a result of the fire.
