Fire at pizza takeaway as police cordon off road

A pizza takeaway went ablaze this morning after a fire started in the kitchen of the high street shop.

Emergency services were called to Miami Pizza on High Street, in Runcorn, at 5.10am on Tuesday.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

The brigade said four appliances - two from Runcorn, one from Widnes, and one from Lymm - plus the aerial platform from Lymm, attended.

On arrival, crews found smoke billowing from the first floor of the detached building.

They isolated the gas supply and doused the flames from outside via the aerial platform.

Cheshire fire service said three firefighters in breathing apparatus forced entry to enter the building.

A Cheshire police spokeswoman said the fire is believed to have started in the kitchen.

The road was shut while emergency services dealt with the incident.

There were two fire engines, two police cars and two utility vehicles at the scene which is cordoned off between Devonshire Place and St Paul's.

The ECHO understands there is a flat above the takeaway however no injuries have been reported.

A Cheshire fire service spokesperson said work continued after the blaze was out to make sure the site was safe.

They said: "Once the fire seemed to be out firefighters began looking for hotspots with a thermal imaging camera.

"A short extensive ladder has been used by firefighters looking for hotspots.

"Roof tiles have been removed and a thorough inspection of the building has taken place.

"A utility company has attended and isolated the electricity supply to the building from outside.

"Firefighters are currently in the building turning over materials affected by the fire and damping them down with a hose reel jet to make them safe.

"The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

"This incident will be updated as more information becomes available."

A Cheshire police spokeswoman said: “Shortly after 6am on Tuesday, August 25, police were called to assist Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service with a fire at a Miami Pizza shop on High Street in Runcorn.

“The fire, located in the kitchen area, has now been extinguished.”
