A fire at the Olympic stadium sent smoke billowing over the east London landmark on Wednesday morning.

Fire crews were called after a van inside the stadium caught light, London Fire Brigade said.

The blaze was bought under control shortly after dawn.

“There was a fire in a van and they have received a stop,” a spokeswoman said.

A Twitter image from inside the stadium, which has since been removed from the network, showed the remains of a construction van on the pitch area of the stadium. The vehicle was still smouldering when the photograph was taken. It was parked next to a charred shipping container, as a fireman surveyed the scene.

Pictures of smoke from the stadium were also quick to circulate on social media.

A spokeswoman for the venue said: “It was a very minor incident.

“London Fire Brigade attended and the stadium was evacuated. Now everyone is back to work.”
