Fire at community centre in The Meadows believed to have been started deliberately

Fire chiefs believe a blaze that broke out in the basement of a city community centre may have been started deliberately.

Two fire engines from London Road Fire Station were called to the Queens Walk Community Centre, Queens Walk, The Meadows, at about 2.20pm on Monday (May 11).

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service Tweeted about the incident, saying: "This was a confirmed fire in the cellar."

A spokesman for the fire service added: "We believe the fire to be deliberate ignition.

"Police attended, it will be in their hands shortly. Staff were evacuated on arrival."

Fire crews used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

Police were called to a reported arson just before 2.45pm.

Officers received a report of a "small fire started near a doorway".

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "No-one was hurt in the fire but a door was damaged.

"Police are currently treating it as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing."

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call the force on 101, quoting incident 401 of May 11.
