Fire at block of flats in Cardiff leaves people trapped in their homes

Firefighters led residents to safety after they became trapped in their homes during a fire at a block of flats in Cardiff.

The fire reportedly started in a ground-floor cupboard at Bryn Fedw in Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, just after 7pm on Wednesday, January 6.

South Wales Fire and Rescue service said two people used towels to stop smoke coming under doors before they were rescued.

They had sent multiple crews to the scene and four people were treated by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The fire service said smoke had filled the stairwell of the three-storey block of flats.

News from your area:

Crews left the scene just before 10pm.

An investigation is now underway into the cause of the fire at the flats that have nine flats over three floors.

Local councillor Joe Carter said: "We are relieved to hear that everyone was safe and we thank the fire service for responding so quickly.

"We hope that the council and fire service can get to the bottom of what happened and learn from the experience."
