Fire at Blantyre tenement building - emergency crews rush to scene

Fire crews have rushed to a tenement building in Blantyre this morning.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to a blaze in Main Street at around 10am, as locals reported seeing plumes of thick smoke above the town.

A spokesperson told the Scottish Sun: "We were called to reports of a fire in a tenement block in Blantyre's Main Street around 9.58am this morning.

"Six pumps were mobilised to the fire.

"We remain at the scene at this time".

Surrounding streets have been closed off as firefighters continue at the scene.

The fire is reported to have caused "considerable damage" to shops on the lower floor of the building, according to the Scottish Sun.

It is unknown if anyone has been injured, or the extent of the damage to Kathy's and Snips Hairdressers (as reported by the Blantyre Telegraph ).

Drivers are warned to avoid the area.
