FIR against BDYF for pasting black ink on govt banner

SILCHAR: The Jal Jeevan Mission from the Cachar district administration on Monday lodged an FIR against the members of Barak Democratic Youth Front (BDYF) at Silchar police station for allegedly dishonouring the Assamese language by pasting black ink on a government banner near Silchar Railway station on Saturday.

Superintendent of police (Cachar), Ramandeep Kaur informed TOI on Monday that a police complaint was received from Jal Jeevan Mission in the DC’s office against a group who were allegedly involved in pasting black ink on government banners in Silchar. On the basis of this, police have registered an FIR against the group, Kaur said.

SP Kaur said nobody has been arrested till now. However, police launched an investigation into the incident soon after the FIR was registered.

Sources said, BDYF, which is allegedly responsible for pasting black ink on the banner of Jal Jeevan Mission, which was written in Assamese language, demanded complete revocation of Assamese language while using banners for promotion and publicity of government schemes in Barak valley. They said, government should follow the 1961 language pack under which Bengali language was granted the status of the official language in Bengali-dominated Barak valley areas of the state.
