Finsbury Park flooding: Residents evacuated as 'roads are replaced by rivers' in London

Roads in London have been 'replaced with rivers' following a water main burst near Hackney.

Photos and videos posted to Twitter this morning show motorists and pedestrians attempting to pass through deep, muddied waters.

The London Fire Brigade has confirmed it is evacuating residents across the area after being called to the scene at 7.47am.

They said: "Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are at the scene of a burst water main in Queens Drive, Finsbury Park.

"An area of around 500 square metres has been affected. Firefighters are evacuating residents from affected properties."

One woman, who lives in a third-floor flat, told the Mirror that streets were fine when her flatmate left at around 7.15am.

But when she looked out the window at around 8am the "roads had been replaced with a river."

Others have said the waters are "still rising" despite efforts to stop the flooding, prompting concern for those with basements and ground-floor properties.

A spokesman for Thames Water told WalesOnline: "We're sorry to any customers affected by our burst main this morning.

"We’ve sent our specialist engineers to the scene as a top priority, and they will be working hard to get everything back to normal as soon as possible."
