Finn Harps sign striker Yoyo Mahdy from Shelbourne

Yoyo Mahdy has swapped Shelbourne for Finn Harps for the 2022 season after the Donegal club reached an agreement for the striker’s transfer.

He had been confirmed last month as a Reds player for their Premier Division return but was tempted by the prospect of regular football following discussions with Harps boss Ollie Horgan.

Mahdy scored four goals in 21 league games as Shels sealed the First Division title but spent much of his time playing wide on the left rather than his preferred central position.

The 24-year-old joined Shels from UCD ahead of the 2021 season but his gametime was hampered by injuries and the form of Michael O’Connor.

Blanch native Mahdy spent the four previous seasons with the Students, scoring 36 goals in 96 appearances, including five in the Premier Division in 2019.

“I’m really excited to be joining the club. Ollie got in touch and we’d a good chat about his ambitions for the club and his plans for me and where I fit in,” Mahdy told the Harps media team.

“A big reason I wanted to come to Harps is they’re an established Premier Division club at this stage, with some great players, a passionate fanbase, and it’s really exciting to be a part of it.”

Horgan said: “I’m delighted that Yoyo has joined the club. He’s eager to get going and prove himself back in the Premier.

“It’s a testament to the support of the 500 club that we’re able to bring the likes of Yoyo in who will hopefully be a big player for us in the season ahead.

“Fans getting behind us is absolutely vital to our success in what will be a savage division.”
