Finn Harps land ex-Scottish Premier League striker Tunde Owolabi

Finn Harps have signed former Hamilton Academical striker Tunde Owolabi on a free transfer.

The Belgian, 25, made nine appearances without scoring for the Scottish Premier League side earlier this season but hasn’t featured since late December.

He was with FC United of Manchester before that and scored 35 goals in 41 appearances during the 2019/2020 season.

Owolabi had been on trial with Ollie Horgan’s Harps but a deal was struck yesterday ahead of the season starting on March 19.

Owolabi said: “I like to score goals and hopefully I can get back to the level I was at last year. I work hard, I’m fast, I like to run in behind and stretch the play.”

Harps boss Horgan is hoping he has pulled off a coup and said: “Tunde is a great lad. He gives us another option at the top end of the pitch.

“He comes with a bit of experience at a good level of football so hopefully he settles in well with us.”

Elsewhere, Cork City have signed Finnish Under-21 international Jonas Häkkinen.

Born in Canada and previously at Vancouver FC and Whitecaps FC, the defender arrives from Finnish side FC Haka.

Häkkinen, capped four times since 2019 at Under-21 level, said: “I’m really excited about the season and can’t wait to get started.”

Rebels boss Colin Healy is attempting to steer the Leesiders back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

And Healy said: “We’re very pleased to get Jonas in. He has good experience already at a decent level in Finland.

“Once we became aware he was available, we were keen to bring him to the club. I’m confident he’ll be a good addition.”
