Finland star who stunned France was born in Motherwell

It's probably an unlikely scenario that a 21-year-old who was born in Motherwell would help Finland create a bit of history at the Euros, but that is exactly what is happening.

Step forward Onni Valakari, an attacking midfielder who is currently playing at Cypriot First Division side Pafos, and who is part of the first Finnish squad to play at a major finals.

Motherwell fans of a certain vintage will instantly recognise that surname, with dad Simo having played for the Fir Park club from 1996 to 2000, with young Onni born in 1999.

Having moved to Derby County, FC Dallas and ended his playing career in TPS in his native Finland, Simo has been a manager since 2010 and is currently at KuPS in Finland.

At one point, Simo was in the running to be Motherwell boss.

Simo told BBC Scotland : "Even if it was brief, Motherwell is a part of his life. He follows the Scottish Premiership.

"As a family holiday, we are planning one day to come back and see where we used to live."

Onni scored 13 goals and made seven assists from 36 games at Pafos, and on his international debut last November, he scored a spectacular curling effort as Finland stunned world champions France 2-0 in Paris.

"His goal wasn't bad, was it?" said Simo. "France must've been thinking: 'What is happening? These unknown players are playing it around us'. Then he scored that goal, it was unbelievable."

Though Onni has done well in Cyrpus, however, Simo says it's time to go somewhere else.

"It's hard to plan anything in football," he said, "but I think it's time for Onni to move on.

"At the same time he's still contracted at Pafos and he needs to play regularly.

"Which league he would go to? A lot depends on the club, the coach and the way of playing.

"If that's right then it can be any league. Maybe one day he could play in Scotland."
