Finland stabbing: One dead and multiple people injured in 'sword attack' at school

One person has died and several were injured in an apparent sword attack at a school in a shopping centre in Finland.

Armed police arrested a man in the eastern Finnish city of Kuopio, with local media reporting that shots were fired.

Police said two people were seriously injured, and a further eight were hurt. The alleged perpetrator was among them, but it is not known how serious his injuries are.

Horrified witnesses said a man pulled a weapon from his bag and started stabbing students at a vocational college.

Roosa Kokkonen, who works for a nearby car service company, said she heard cries for help.

She told Finland's MTV News that she was told the man had tried to stab as many people as he could.

A woman in her 30s was bleeding from a wound in her hand, she said.

Paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 1pm local time, and authorities later confirmed there had been a fatality.

Police said in a statement posted on Twitter: “According to current information, nine people have been injured, including one suspect.

"In addition, one person is known to have died."

The college wrote on its website: "We have just had a serious incident at our Hermann office in Kuopio.

"The authorities and Savo Vocational College will inform when more information is available."

"One dead body has been found at the college premises of Kuopio Herman," police said on Twitter.

They gave no further details on what had happened or what provoked the violence.

The shopping centre was cordoned off in the aftermath of the incident.

Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne posted on Twitter: "The violence at Savo Vocational College in Kuopio is shocking and completely unacceptable.

"I have discussed it with the Director General of Police and the government is monitoring the situation closely.

"On behalf of myself and the entire Government, I extend my condolences to all the relatives."
