Finland fans celebrate with heroes after team seal maiden major tournament berth at Euro 2020

There were euphoric scenes in Helsinki on Friday night as Finland's men's football team secured qualification for a major tournament for the first time in their history with a match to spare.

Markku Kanerva's side beat minnows Liechtenstein 3-0 in their penultimate Euro 2020 qualifier at the Telia 5G Arena courtesy of Jasse Tuominen's early goal and a second-half brace from Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki.

That win means that Finland, guaranteed to finish second behind Italy in Group J, have now officially sealed their spot at next summer's European Championship.

They complete a triumphant qualifying campaign against Greece in Athens on Monday evening.

Finland - which has a population of 5.5 million people - have never previously appeared at a World Cup or European Championship, missing out on Euro 1980 by just one solitary point.

Confirmation of their place at Euro 2020 was understandably greeted with delight by supporters, who burst onto the field after the win over Liechtenstein to celebrate with their heroes.

Fans could also be seen revelling in such a momentous achievement at a fountain in central Helsinki, with parties sure to continue long into the night.
