Finishing above Spurs gives Arsenal youngster inspiration to fulfil Champions League 'dream'

The last time Arsenal qualified for the Champions League was in 2015/16 when they finished second behind a fairy tale Leicester City side.

Since then it has been fifth and sixth place finishes and the Europa League. That could be about to change this season under Unai Emery.

The Gunners lie third, two points clear of Tottenham and Manchester United with just six matches remaining and none of the top six left to play.

It's certainly not a bad position to be in and Ainsley Maitland-Niles suggests the squad's focus is single-minded.

Arsenal target Ryan Fraser could be the wing wonder of Unai Emery's transfer revolution

He told the official Arsenal website: "It’s every team’s dream to play Champions League football.

"It’s the best European competition in the world. To play against all the big teams would be fantastic and you get to test yourself fully.

"That’s all we wanted to do, to go out there and win. We’ve made one step closer to succeeding."

Of course, the return of St Totteringham's day is looking plausible once again, and Spurs' defeat to Liverpool allowed Arsenal the opportunity to overtake their North London rivals.

The 21-year-old admitted that slip up provided an extra incentive.

He said: “Yes, of course. I’m pretty sure everyone was at home watching the game last night. Everyone studied Newcastle too.

"It’s just a good opportunity now for us to go out there, show our quality and say, ‘look, we are one of the best teams in the league and we can compete for the Champions League once again’."
