'Finishing 10th next season!' - These Chelsea fans fume over Olivier Giroud contract update

News of Chelsea taking up the option to extend Olivier Giroud's contract by 12 months has got plenty of supporters talking.

The 32-year-old had been linked with a return to France having found first-team opportunities - particular in the Premier League - hard to come by in his first full season at Stamford Bridge.

Both Nice and Marseille had both expressed an interest in signing the former Arsenal striker who outlined his plan for next season.

Borussia Dortmund send classy 15-word message to Christian Pulisic after final league game

"Next year I will need to have a more important role to play,” he said last month. "The most important thing for me is to be happy on the pitch, to enjoy the game and to have more minutes.

"I’m a competitor. I really want to play more. The thing is, I just want to enjoy it, because I’m 32 and I’ve won the World Cup, but I want to retire satisfied."

Whether he will be a regular under Maurizio Sarri next term remains to be seen, but football.london understands that the west London outfit have activated a clause in Giroud’s contract to keep the France international for another year.

This decision coincides with the threat of a two-transfer window for the Blues which means they can not register any new players in the summer as things stand.

Although, they are expected to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The prospect of Giroud leading the line for the Blues next season with either Gonzalo Higuain or a returning Tammy Abraham as his back-up has certainly garnered a lot of chatter from fans on social media.
