Finglas dog owner's warning as beloved pets catch nasty gastro bug

A Finglas dog owner has urged others to be particularly careful when taking their pets for a walk in a local park.

Several pooches have contracted a gastro bug after visiting Johnstown park with some even needing medication to get better.

A concerned local took to Facebook to warn other dog lovers.

She posted: "Be careful with your doggos in Johnstown park. We walk ours here 2+ times a day and he's been very sick the last 24-hours with this vomiting bug."

The uncommonly violent gastro bug is thought to have been originated in the UK but thankfully most pups have made a full recovery.

A Finglas dog owner told Dublin Live that the bug was particularly nasty.

She said: "Floyd was quite sick vomiting a ton!

"But we handled it at home. Me and my partner are experienced dog owners so we were able to manage without any medical attention.

"Some dogs in the park have needed gastro food and pro biotics."

The local woman explained that Floyd became ill shortly after visiting Johnstown Park.

She said: "That's the only park we walk in we live really close by.

"One morning we woke up to vomit and diarrhoea every where.

"Another person had told us there was a virus going around the parks in Dublin and it had came down from Northern Ireland.

"It lasted for I'd say 48 hours. He was very weak not himself at all."

Thankfully, Floyd made a speedy recovery and is back to his playful self.

The experienced dog owner says that certain simple steps will get Dublin pups on the road to recovery quickly.

She said: "Lots, lots, lots of water. Keep a close eye. Keep them home until it passes. Seek veterinary advice if it goes on for more then 24-hours or if there's blood in the stool or vomit."

Other dog owners had similar ordeals in recent days.

One local said: "My dog got it.

"He even had blood in the diarrhoea and vomit.

"He was put on a probiotic 'Buscopan' for cramps and an antibiotic.

"Took 8 days. All good but I felt so sorry for the poor thing lost weight and everything."

Another wrote: "My two caught it there this time last year, both very sick but recovered just fine."
