'Fingertip' searches at hospital as hunt for bomb blast clues continues across city

Counter terror officers are overseeing "fingertip searches" outside Liverpool Women's Hospital amid the ongoing investigation into the bomb blast in its car park.

Detectives believe their work at the site will continue over the next few days, with the scene there not likely to be released before Sunday.

The flat near Sefton Park rented by Emad Al Swealmeen, the man behind the suspected terror attack, remains the centre of the investigation, but "significant items" have also been discovered at his former Kensington home.

Counter Terror Police North West issued an update on its investigation in a statement released on Thursday afternoon.

The specialist unit confirmed the man believed to have built the Improvised Explosive Device that he carried into a taxi on Sunday has now been formally identified as 32-year-old Al Swealmeen.

Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson, of Counter Terror Police North West, said: "He is believed to have been born in Iraq and lived most recently at the Rutland Avenue address.

"Officers have traced a relative of Al Swealmeen and we will be speaking with them today.

As well as the police scene at the hospital, the properties linked to Al Swealmeen on Rutland Avenue and Sutcliffe Street remain cordoned off.

A controlled explosion was carried out in Sefton Park, close to the Rutland Avenue address, after a suspicious item was discovered by officers on Monday.

Bomb disposal officers were sent to Sutcliffe Street on Wednesday after the recovery of "suspicious packages".
